Identifiable symbols. Universal language. They have the potential of dissolving language barriers. I just returned from travels in Quebec — I do speak a bit of French, but I found myself resorting to — Est-ce que vous parlez Anglais? Non? Oh boy (in my head). Despite my attempts there were clearly times when I had this blank stare on my face not knowing what sort of response was appropriate. At least the usual universal symbols appear on bathroom doors, the metro, etc. In a non-related way this leads me to the much-loved, corn-shaped, tri-colored Halloween candy….bet you can guess it? Perhaps it’s just good marketing, but I like to think costumes and candy corn is symbolic of this coming holiday. Not to mention I LOVE candy corn, though my friend tells me its one of the worst 10 foods for you. Is that even possible? Wax and sugar and food coloring — how can that be unhealthy? Trick or Treat from this designer with a sweet tooth.

An Aboriginal Mosaic
Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011Several posts ago I spoke of Aboriginal Art — my affinity for this seemingly primitive work. I have yet to determine if it’s because Australia is my birthplace or that this art is wonderfully expressive with simple lines. It’s amazing how a few shapes and repeated patterns and cultural symbols can tell a complete story. So here runs my tiled river with the various hues of blue dictating rivers and banks and unchartered waters.
