You get that to work with AND you get to create relationship AND you’re given a place. Say a shoe factory or a farm or the dry cleaners. From there you create a scene, a dialogue and a relationship with the person you’re on stage with….and the IMPROV teacher said this is exercise is going to be fun. It wasn’t. And it was. IMPROV class kicked my butt. I’m reminded of something I heard Jessica Bendinger, an acclaimed Hollywood screenwriter, say when she spoke of her recently released novel The Seven Rays. (from her site: The story follows 17 year-old, Beth Michaels, who uncovers elements of the supernatural on her journey of self discovery. The words: “You are more than you think you are” mysteriously present themselves to Beth and ultimately drive her quest.) Bendinger suggests getting the perfectionist out of the room. Check. And allowing yourself the permission to fail. Check. And remembering you’re writing to connect with others. Got it. So I’m thinking (shhhhh brain) that IMPROV and writing and designing and even yoga all require similar skills. You need to be present and bring it. For instance, when I’m designing something, be it a label or brochure or logo, I get a few parameters and the rest is up to me. What am I going to bring to the table? The point of all this? I’m going to design a label for homemade lemoncello as if it were an IMPROV skit. Over the next few blogs, my readers get to see how this raw design unfolds. I don’t get the luxury of editing. I have to commit to what I have and make it work. On stage? My design. My IMPROV skills. And you. I have no idea how this will play out until I start. My first scene partner? A photograph of Ralph, who gave me this recipe. Stay tuned.

Yes And…
Tuesday, June 29th, 2010Can A Bird Hang From A Tree By Its Tail?
Thursday, June 17th, 2010Yes. Why not? Dr. Seuss created a wildly popular fictitious menagerie and made green eggs and ham desirable. So I created an Australian bird with a long beak and even longer tail which allows it to hang from trees. And in fact, this bird prefers a vegetarian diet of bright green leaves and to catch these leaves in flight for fun. To quote Dr. Seuss, “From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere.” So with that in mind, I’m creating a series of postcards; the artwork is influenced by the Aboriginal artwork I so love (and have included throughout my website); I created my own animals and introduced a more vibrant palette. The tag line so far — change your perspective. I may be mildly influenced by my IMPROV classes to stretch my brain and invoke play AND I am okay with that. Watch for more inspired creations. Imagine something ridiculous. (It may just exist). ; )
Be Discerning. Be A Tiny Bit Inconvenienced.
Tuesday, June 15th, 2010On a given day, I don’t know whether to get angry, cry or vomit…I am paraphrasing (a statement made by a geologist being interviewed on NPR in regards to how he felt about the oil spill). My point being you can turn the smallest degree and read or see coverage on the oil spill; the facts continue to change; the solutions ineffective; the devastation heart breaking. For awhile I chose to unplug from this deluge of information, now that feels negligent. What feels more powerful is to read with discernment and stand in appreciation of what is good and take action to solve what isn’t working with hope, knowledge, partnership., vision and just maybe, a little inconvenience. If you’ve been in the gulf waters, you know its beauty and vitality. How can you show you care?
